Yvonne Vissing is an internationally respected leader in human rights, social justice, democracy, and child well-being. She is a sociologist, Equitas-trained human rights leader, and former National Institute of Mental Health Postdoctoral Research Fellow. She serves on the Human Rights Council of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is U.S. Policy Chair for Hope for Children—the Cyprus-based Convention on the Rights of the Child Policy Center—and is a member of the Scientific Committee for the Universities Network for Children in Armed Conflict, based in Italy. Dr. Vissing is a respected author who has published more than 33 books, along with numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and professional presentations. She is the founder of the nonprofit organization The Initiative for Civility in Everyday Life, which houses The World As It Could Be program. An award-winning teacher and scholar, Dr. Vissing is the founding director of the Center for Childhood & Youth Studies and co-founder of the Department of Healthcare Studies at Salem State University in Massachusetts, USA.

Sociological Initiatives Foundation. $20,000 to study homelessness cause and effects, and encampment/tent city policies. Mixed methodology including participatory action research (PAR), focus groups, organizational leaders and policy makers, and with homeless individuals and people with lived experience.
Whiting Foundation – 2 fellowship awards. Fellowship award to travel to Wales, the UK, and Ireland to meet with government, education, and policy makers about how to implement human rights education into the nation and community infrastructure. A second award was for research on child rights and to network with child studies scholars in the United Kingdom and European Union.
Get Real: Alcohol prevention strategy program. This research grant was provided by the Foundation for Alcohol Education to incorporate mentorship, education, and social support for people to identify strategies to avoid alcohol overuse during the holidays.

Sociological Initiatives Foundation project on homeless encampments. This project studied how communities make decisions about whether, or how, to allow tent communities and homeless encampments. I served as GAL on approximately 50 cases primarily in Strafford and Rockingham counties. Cases included interviewing children of all ages and their parents, relatives, friends, teachers, counselors, neighbors, and others. I filed extensive and lengthy reports with the court, especially around custody, visitation (parent custodial time), supervision, and mental health needs of the children and family. I was the GAL on the Seth Bader murder case in 1996.
Ombudsman Affiliations – I am a member of the Coalition of Federal Ombudsman (COFO) and the United States Ombudsman Association (USOA). I have received extensive training from the USOA in their Atlanta training program (September 2023). I have also written two articles on ombudsmanship, one about ombuds programs in higher education and the other in child advocacy ombuds programs. These are awaiting finalization and publication.
Mediator Training – State of New Hampshire – I took a year long mediation training course with a GAL/Mediator expert and received a certificate as a mediator. I have done some mediation work with couples who wished to avoid highly contested court proceedings, and I have worked with families to deal with parent-child dynamics to address behavioral issues.

As the US Policy chair for the Hope for Children UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Policy Center (a group of international scholars out of Cyprus), I am regularly called upon to do local, state, national, and international presentations on children’s human rights topics, particularly around their provision, protection, and participation rights. AUTHOR
Yvonne is a prolific author who has published more than 33 books for publishing houses that include Routledge, Rutgers, Vernon Press, Springer, University of Kentucky Press, University Press of New England, ABC-Clio, Bloomsbury, and others. Her books include sole-author books as well as edited volumes. Topics include human rights, child maltreatment, women without children, welfare, immigration, sports, homelessness, and a variety of sociologically related issues.
She has edited a series of books on contemporary social issues for Springer, addressing topics such as school shootings, gun control, reproductive healthcare, trauma, war, peace, human rights, globalization, community change, refugees, unaccompanied youth, child maltreatment, and unintentional harm, or iatrogenesis.
Yvonne is expanding her writing career from academic nonfiction into accessible books for a broader readership. She has self-published five books about Santa Claus, as well as a book about preparing a thoughtful exit plan for the end of life.
Her current self-help projects include Muck, which presents life’s difficult transitions as opportunities to cultivate growth rather than remain rooted in toxic relationships, and Divorcing the Devil, which explores the process of divorcing the “devils” within and around us.
She is now bringing her sociological background into fiction, where she can explore complex ideas in more creative and entertaining ways. Her romantasy novel, 12 Days, asks whether true love and soul mates can endure across multiple lifetimes. A sequel, 12 More Days, and a prequel, 6 Months Ago, are currently in development.
Yvonne is excited to create meaningful, thought-provoking work for general readers while continuing to explore the social and emotional questions that have shaped her career. She is a member of the New Hampshire Writers’ Project.

She also was an invited speaker on child rights education at the 8th International Conference on Human Rights Education in Montreal Dec. 2017 and the 5th International Conference on Human Rights Education in Washington, Dec. 2015.
